ABOUT
You might know us as the Connecticut Humanities Council, the 501(c)3 state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities that provides grants to historical societies for exhibitions and programs exploring our state’s rich history, that offers book-based facilitated discussions for all ages in libraries across the state, that provides after-school Book Voyagers programs in the Hartford, New Haven and New London school systems…

Whew. That’s a lot of “what” but not much “why.”

We’re Connecticut Humanities, the new name for the old friend that does all of those things and more. Rather than describe here all the wonderful programs we produce and why they’re important (and they are!), we’d just like you to remember the common thread that joins them all: connecting people and ideas.

Whether we create a program on our own, team up with partners around the state, or provide the funding to help other cultural organizations bring programs to life, all of our work brings people together to express, share and explore ideas in thoughtful and productive ways.

We believe that the humanities provide a way to see our world more clearly, connect more fully with the people around us (especially those who don’t look the same, share all the same beliefs or come from the same backgrounds) and, in the process, probably even learn a bit more about ourselves.

The work of Connecticut Humanities helps all of us in Connecticut grow as individuals, become more connected members of our communities and more vital participants in a democratic society.
