🖤 What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth) marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared freedom for the last remaining enslaved African Americans—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Though freedom was law, it was denied in reality.
That day became a spiritual reckoning, a people’s victory, and a symbol of delayed justice finally spoken aloud.

✊🏿 A Long Walk to National Recognition

Juneteenth became a U.S. federal holiday on June 17, 2021, signed into law by President Joe Biden after decades of advocacy.

🙌🏾 Special Tribute:

• Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” walked from Texas to D.C. to demand national recognition at age 89.

• Grassroots elders, activists, and Black sovereigns preserved Juneteenth through community storytelling, education, and tradition—especially in Texas, which made it a state holiday in 1980.

• The 2020 racial justice uprisings re-centered Juneteenth in public discourse, showing the power of collective memory.

The government made it official. But we—the people—made it sacred.
